The need for English-Spanish translators and interpreters in the United States will increase by more than 26 percent in the next decade. There is a lack of graduate programs and degrees in the fields of Translation and Interpreting. Finally, there is a lack of properly credentialed academics to teach in the few graduate programs that do exist.
The principal goals of this proposal are: 1) to make available to bilingual Hispanics and non-Hispanics a fully online graduate program that prepares them for careers as translators and interpreters; 2) create an inventory of online graduate courses in Translation and Interpreting that will supplement the inventory of classes for the Diplomate in Translation that is currently offered by UTB/TSC; 3) provide students the opportunity to earn a concentration in Translation and Interpreting within the M.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies (MAIS) completely online; 4) recruit an internationally recognized faculty with specific experience and training in the most important sub-specialties in the field of Translation and Interpreting, thus ensuring a high level of instruction to those students that enroll in the M.A. degree; 5) disseminate didactical methodologies, curriculum structuring, and course content among interested graduate institutions, agencies, and professional organizations throughout the United States; and 6) institutionalize the online graduate degree in Translation and Interpreting so that it becomes a permanent degree offered by UTB/TSC. This project seeks to develop the inherited bilingual ability of many U.S. Hispanics as well as other students into a specialized professional graduate degree that can be obtained nationwide and worldwide through online delivery.
As the first year of the project is reaching its consolidation stage (fourth quarter of the first year period), productions of course materials is advancing successfully and all courses are expected to be offered as per project calendar:
